Who Will Be The Next England Manager?

Current England manager Gareth Southgate has been in the role for coming up to four years now and lead the national team to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup which is their joint-best finish since winning the tournament in 1966.

Southgate has installed the feel-good factor back to the England team which has been missing for some time now and after his sides fourth-place finish in 2018, he has his sights set on victory at Euro 2020 which will in fact take place in the summer of 2021 due to the worldwide pandemic.

Although Southgate isn’t likely to leave his role any time soon having signed a contract which sees him as England manager until the 2022 World Cup, bookmakers are already taking bets on his replacement.

But who will replace Southgate?

1. Sean Dyche

Odds: 4/1

The current Burnley coach, who has been in charge of the Premier League side since 2012, is the bookies favourite to replace Gareth Southgate.

Sean Dyche, the current longest-serving Premier League manager and former player for Nottingham Forest, Millwall and Watford, was part of the England Under-21 staff which was put together by Stuart Pearce in 2012.

He has been tipped by ex-England manager Roy Hodgson to reach national coaching level at some point in his career and the bookies clearing agree having priced him at just 4/1 to replace Southgate.

2. Graham Potter

Odds: 7/1

Former West Brom, York City and Macclesfield Town left-back Graham Potter is the bookies second-favourite to take on the role of England manager after Southgate.

The current Brighton manager may not be as high-profile as some other options the FA has but he has been tipped by many as having England manager quality.

Whether or not Potter has more to prove at club level before moving into a national role is debatable but should he be offered the job, it would be hard for him to turn down.

3. Eddie Howe

Odds: 7/1

Eddie Howe has been linked with the job of the Three Lions boss for some time now and was one of the contenders following the departure of Roy Hodgson. The former Bournemouth manager, who left the club by mutual consent on 1st August 2020, said in 2019 that he would turn the England job down if he was offered it as he enjoyed club football too much. Whether his recent departure from Bournemouth will have changed his mind is unknown but his ability as a manger shouldn’t be questioned having guided The Cherries from League One to the Premier League where they remained for five seasons.

4. Chris Wilder

Odds: 11/1

The current Sheffiled United boss is another manager who has been tipped to take on the role of England coach in the future.

Chris Wilder, who took over from Nigel Adkins at Sheffield United in 2016, took the club out of League One in his first season and led them to the Premier League two season later where they remain today and achieved an impressive 9th-place finish in their first season in the top flight.

5. Frank Lampard

Odds: 12/1

The former Chelsea and Manchester City midfielder has only been in the management game for two years having spent a season each at Derby County and Chelsea. However, the 42-year old who has won three Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League title, four FA Cups, a UEFA Europa League title, and two Football League Cups has impressed many as a manager and led Chelsea to four-place finish in the Premier League as well as reaching the final of the FA Cup and the last 16 of the Champions League.

The next couple of seasons will be cruicial for Lampard as a manager but with Southgate’s contract not ending until 2022, he has time to impress even further.
