Sunderland Face Another Difficult Season

With speculation growing that American businessman Mark Campbell is set to become the new majority owner in Sunderland AFC before the end of June, it has become clear that should the deal go through Campbell wants to appoint John Park as Director Of Football to work above existing Black Cats manager Jack Ross next season.

Sunderland finished the League One season poorly ending up in fifth position and then losing the Play Off Final to Charlton Athletic courtesy of a goal in the 95th minute. Ross had the advantage of by far the biggest wage bill in the League last season but saw his side threw away leads in over twenty games throughout the campaign.

John Park is currently working in an advisory role for Vancouver Whitecaps and Macabi Tel Aviv having spent 11 years as Chief Scout at Celtic where he helped the Club sign players such as , Virgil van Dijk, Victor Wanyama, Stuart Armstrong, Ki Sung-yueng, Fraser Forster and Gary Hooper whom the Club were able to sell on for a huge profit.

Current majority shareholder at Sunderland is Stewart Donald who it is understood is no longer able to keep financing the club and has been keen to sell some or all of his stake for a number of months.

Sunderland are bookie favourites to win League 1 next season at odds of around 9/2. However they were in the same position last season at lower odds of around 3/1. Sunderland will face stiff competition in the coming season from the newly relegated teams such as Ipswich Town and of course Portsmouth who topped League 1 for much of last season and won the Checkatrade Trophy beating Sunderland in the Final.
